Conditions We Treat

Conditions

The conditions we evaluate and treat

We evaluate and treat the conditions listed below. Treatment for any of these conditions begins with a psychiatric evaluation, during which we will review your history, current symptoms, and goals of treatment.

Depression. Depression is more than low mood, and it affects sleep, appetite, concentration, energy, and interest in the things a person ordinarily cares about. It is treatable, and several effective treatments are available. Learn more on the Depression page.

Treatment-Resistant Depression. Depression that has not responded adequately to two or more antidepressant medications is described as treatment-resistant. The term describes the treatment history rather than the person, and a number of additional treatment options become available at that point. Learn more on the Treatment-Resistant Depression page.

Bipolar Disorder. Bipolar disorder is often diagnosed years after it begins, because the depressive episodes bring people in and the hypomanic periods often do not. Recognizing it changes the treatment plan substantially.

Anxiety. Anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, and specific phobias. They are among the most common psychiatric conditions and among the most treatable.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. OCD involves intrusive thoughts that cause distress and repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce it. It is commonly misunderstood, including by the people who have it.

PTSD. Post-traumatic stress disorder may follow a single event or a period of repeated events, and it may appear long after the events themselves. Effective treatments are available.

ADHD. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder frequently continues into adulthood and is frequently recognized for the first time there. Diagnosis is careful work, because several other conditions produce similar symptoms.

Substance Use Disorders. We treat alcohol, opioid, stimulant, cannabis, and nicotine use disorders, and we treat them alongside the psychiatric conditions that frequently accompany them.

Psychiatric Conditions of Later Life. Depression, anxiety, behavioral symptoms associated with memory disorders, and symptoms that appear for the first time in later life call for evaluation that considers medical conditions and medications together with psychiatric ones.

Insomnia. Chronic insomnia is a condition in its own right and is also a symptom of many others. Evaluating what is producing it is the first step in treating it.

Scope

If your diagnosis is not listed

If your diagnosis is not listed here, that does not mean we do not treat it. General psychiatry is the foundation of the practice, and we see patients with a wide range of psychiatric conditions, including some that are uncommon. It is also common for a person to arrive without a clear diagnosis, or with one that has never quite fit.

An evaluation is the way to find out. If we are not the right practice for your care, we will tell you so and help you find a practice that is.

If we are not the right practice for your care, we will tell you so.
